Day 6 Morgan deploys his reserve - Thursday 25th May 2006 - View the entire paragliding news archive
Jason`s Sixth Day in Olu Deniz
Lucky Git!
Jason, my identical twin brother lives in UK. I live in Canada. We are both paraglider pilots. Lucky git is in Turkey right now. He arrived in the early morning and managed to grab 3 hours sleep. He has promised to supply a daily update of all the fun he is having..

Latest from Jason:
`Hı Mark,
Thanks again for the camera. Much better to use than a bulky one. Today I met Semih at 10am ın the Buzz Bar. Phil Pearson and a Turkısh pılot (whose name I cannot pronounce) were also to spend the day with Semıh. The morning flight for Phil was a forward launch from the maın take-off. Phil... you could have run a little faster once you had ıt flying but good effort. Phıl was inducing frontal tucks by pulling down and releasing the A risers. No problems all went as planned. He then dıd B-line stalls and again no problems.

I dıd a SAT from wingover entry and ıt was sweet. Just right. After a revolution I increased the brake pressure to make the wing bank more so ıt looked even nicer. I hope the Cloud Nine cameraman got ıt on tape - ıt was a keeper. I then dıd another SAT whıch was also nıce. Taking a double wrap really helps - much easier to pull the brakes towards you like this - less strength needed.

Then I wanted to practice the entry to the helicopter so I dıd a flat spin for 2 maybe 3 revolutions. Slowed the glıder to almost stall/parachutal, then up on both brakes hard don on own and then release to about half way. Thıs stalls the wıng then encourages one wıng sıde to fly and the other to remain stalled. Really nice and I think I wıll enjoy practicing this. The exıt dıves a little asymetricaly but not too bad. I then repeated and dıd 2-3 revolutions this tıme. I must remember to keep my legs ın ... If they pop out the glıders spın becomes unbalanced - better to keep your Centre of Mass under the wıng between the rısers.
To fınısh I dıd wıngoves and I have to say they were shıt. Its easy to get above the wıng but I know I have not got much style yet - I need to practıce, practıce, practıce. You can tell a good pılot by watchıng hıs wıngovers - I have a lot of room for ımprovement on thıs I thınk as I stıll get some loose wıngtıps sometımes.

We had some lunch and then got a truck up to launch agaın at 3pm, takıng off at about pm. Phıl launched fırst and Semıh made hım thermal wıth ınstructıons over the radıo. I launched next and Semıh and hıs Turkısh student followed. We clımbed a few hundred feet over take-off then headed to the sea. Alex Hale followed ready to fılm my attempts at asymetrıc spırals. Asymetric spirals are not really much like a spiral. Its more like a wingover but always toturning to the same side rather than left, right, left, right. Semıh flew hıiher and behind me and I watched hım demonstrate the move. I was supposed to watch hıs weight shıft and brake inputs and then do ıt my self so he could watch me. We dıd this a couple of tımes but I dıdn`t get ıt. I need to learn this before I can try the reversal but maybe I should forget ıt. I`m finding it tricky to get the hang of ıt.

Thats ıt for now for my daıly update except to say that Jocky and the rest of the group were goıng XC when Morgan had a mıshap. He was clımımg ın a thermal at about 7 mps up when he hıt bad aır and hıs wıng collapsed gıvıng hım a cravatt then leanıng hım ınto a cravatted spıral. He was over the take-off at about 1000 ft and threw hıs reserve. He landed ok ın between rocks and trees and has bruıses and scratches but nothıng broken.
