Powered Paragliding Ontario Pilots can fly the whole of North America - can you?

Here in Canada the new season is just around the corner, and with it I know there will be lots more fun this year, as we train new pilots.

In case you don`t already know, I work at Powered Paragliding Ontario.
Chief flying instructor Andre Zeman is just as obsesessed with flying as I am.

Since moving to Canada, what I am most surprised about, are the differences between the Canadian and US systems. Canada requires you to undertake PPG training with Transport Canada qualified instructors (such as myself, Andre and Frank). You must take ground school (theory), complete various flight tasks and sit a short exam. You then apply for an ultralight license.

In the US it is much more open. There is no legal requirement to undergo any training. Most US pilots do undergo a course of some sort or other, although legally it is possible to fly without instruction (not too many people manage to get themselves in the air though!)

One interesting result is that US pilots (unless trained and licensed in Canada) are unable to fly in Canada legally, whereas Canadian pilots are able to fly in the US and Canada (as Andre and I do several times a year).
If you are in the US and have been considering getting involved in powered paragliding, then think about getting trained in Canada. It will open up the whole of North America to you!
