I recently completed my first British cross country flight with the aid of Andy Brazier and ?Living legend? Nick Roberts (whom, I basically followed until he got much higher than me). Nick was running a cross country surgery over the bank
holiday weekend, so we thought we would tag along. On the Saturday we had a bit of fun getting up the track.
Andy's new mpv was struggling to stay clear of the mud. Sunday was no good. On Monday we decided we would walk up (at least as long as Talybont's walk up...hour or so). Fortunately we got a lift in a monster truck!
I bought a t shirt from the South Wales Sore Ring Club... or is that soaring? (you'd have to see the t-shirt) and off we went. From the time we both left the hill to the time I landed, was about 18 minutes. Nick, naturally, flew further and longer than I did. I flew from Fan G to Penderyn.
I landed near a small farm and got a lift, from the friendly farmer, to a main road where I was promptly picked up by Andy. The best thing is that I have the whole flight on video. I know exactly where I went wrong and what I would do differently next time. Basically I misjudged the wind direction and wasted height on crosswind glide. The previous attempt on Saturday had seen a 5 kilometer hike with my paraglider back to the car (over marshy uneven ground) after leaving the hill prematurely, i.e before Nick! |
