Light and Variable
After joking about André's insistence on reverse launching in almost all wind strengths we arrived at the staff field to find that there was no wind at all. We would both be forward launching with flight suits on in stifling heat. I assisted André's launch. The wing came up quickly, but he was running like a dog to get in the air, and even when he did he wasn't climbing at all. It actually looked like he might have to get back out of the seat to land. It seemed he was taking off in strong sink. Next up it was my turn. After about an hour of strength sapping exertion I was finally in the air having tried both directions of the airstrip. On several occasions I had the wing up and was on full throttle, but the wing was not lifting and I was bearing the full weight of the machine. It was very strange and there really wasn't any wind. I had thought I might not get up, but knew that I would never hear the end of it from Andre if I gave up! Finally! By the time I was airborne I was just about ready to collapse...
