I will immediately become the most popular bachelor of the game.

But seriously, anyone else wish the tsundere candidate would remain a dinosaur to you the whole time (kind of like Jamie!) just to shake off the whole "hidden softer side" cliché?

Or that they could reject your marriage proposal or event invites even at higher heart levels?

I suppose I'm just getting tired of "Gill is the new Chase is the new Vaughn is the new Gray." And suddenly you give them enough gifts and it's love! They live and die at your whim! You're gonna go all Beauty and the Beast on us? Don't let him be redeemed for once.

On the other hand, it's certainly not the only cliché character stereotype out there, but I think the constant onslaught on Vaughn-oriented fanfics is wearing me down. I suppose I prefer to see a twist like Won (Won is all about tricking himself out with a sweet cash cow) or Rock (a lazy, dimwitted, insensitive lout). Granted, I prefer to really go for the ones who aren't douchebags at all (or at least don't make you work for a scrap of courtesy), I just hope they overhaul the tsundere archetype soon.

Well, technically tsuntsun is a stereotype all on its own. It's just not used as much because tsundere (be it male or female) is more popular. I've never really been a fan of tsundere in general because I hate how it's really just a weak-willed person pretending to be strong. I would be happier if I never saw a tsundere girl again. If I'm going after a girl who's a standoffish ######, I want her to stay a standoffish ######. I don't want her to suddenly melt into a puddle of goo and become a whiny little waifu that can't stand up for herself. The same goes for tsundere boys.

I always thought tsuntsun and deredere were offshoots of the general tsundere package. Like deredere was the gooey, soft, melty side, and tsuntsun was "I hope you and your family are savaged by wolverines you sack of crud", and tsundere was the emotionally indecisive and unstable middle.

But I hear you. I think what broke me was Vaughn. I always look at the cold one, think "They'rte going to take a bullet for me. They're soft and cuddly and sweet under their gruff and hardened exterizzzzzzzzz..." and wonder when they'll freaking surprise me. At least make them severely violent like Naru from Love Hina! I want a tsuntsun marriage candidate who punches you into orbit out of embarrassment when you friggin propose!

On the other hand, their "shy sweet" types don't usually feel as repetitive. Mary doesn't really seem all that shy except when she falls for someone. Candace felt fairly new, even if she was the beginner's moe handbook. Even Sabrina is different enough from Mary in personality (if not looks) that I want to try her out.

You're right about that, but tsuntsun can also stand on its own. (It's usually in reference to breaking the tsundere stereotype, though.)

Hrm. I dunno about the shy, sweet types. I get so bored of them. After a while they all just start to blend together and I start to compare them all to Maria. Like, when I played AP and talked to Candace, I immediately thought, "So..... you're Maria with half the personality, only you knit instead of write stories. Great." (For the record, I love Maria. I've just gotten bored of her stereotype.)

I'd like to see another girl like Alice from Hero of Leaf Valley. She was a high-maintenance ######, but after playing Harvest Moon for so many years, that was interesting. (Speaking of which, I need to finish wooing her one of these days.)

I guess, I just always thought tsundere was supposed to be "always rough" variety.

Thing is, I liked Candace in ToT. I love AP, but... some characters kind of lost some personality in the transition. Candace was one of them.

I actually like Selena and Luke as candidates, though. Selena's a major snob, Luke's exceptionally hyper and dimwitted... they're characters I actually love to see more sides of. Same with Dennyt from the Island games - he was pretty much Kai Redux, but I actually enjoy the way they wrote his IoH lines. Not as smug or playeriffic as Kai, but not as hyper or dim as Luke. Single-minded and boastful, goofy, and laid-back, but despite his fish obsession, he was one of the candidates that wound up being an overall favorite of mine.

I also wouldn't mind another one like Eve from the SNES days. She flirts shamelessly with you at all times and constantly tries to get you drunk. Or a complete, Engrish-speaking whackjob like SNES Nina. Her lines were pretty horribly translated, but that was part of the fun and joy of courting Nina.

The "hidden softer side" and "I'm so cool 'cause I hate the world and everything on it and want everything to just die because it's not like they're there to me anyway" are both incredibly cliché. But with the once a jerk always a jerk, it'd end up getting bloody if we ever crossed paths. Seriously, you can't serve me donuts like that.
