Okay, so here's the deal. I finally got my computer back. Wonderfuls, right? Not really. It's still not fixed, and it still has that god awful Vista still on it.

Well, you found an XP CD while going through your stuff the other day! Why not just use that, right? No. Your father reminds you it's the boot leg copy he gave you that killed your computer thus requiring you to get Vista in the first place.

Well crud. You don't know what to do. He suggests going to a site that sounds extremely phony and looking to see how much Windows 7 is so you can upgrade you computer. But oh. It may not actually be Vista that's the problem, so you'd lose all your data for nothing.

Okay dad. You're really on my poop list right now.

So mom says. Why spend your money fixing something that is broken? Just buy a new laptop. You won't want a desktop when you go off to college in a year anyway.

Oh yeah, I'm doing that, aren't I? Thanks mom. You're not on my poop list.

So anyway. The entire point of that little story was to introduce y'all to why I'm looking at laptops. It's not just for show, I'd like to ask you tech savvy people about what you think is best. ;D

What I'm planning to run on it that I know of are GIMP and Sims 3 with one little expansion pack, maybe more if I get any.

And pictures. Loads and loads of pictures.

This here is my only candidate thus far. I want a laptop basically that can run those applications above and still have a little memory left, if possible. As for money issues, I'll be saving up for this, and my mom said she'll back me up $100.

So, questions, comments, suggestions, etc. I can has them here please.

I'mma have to do some research, but how much do you want to spend?
I'm not sure that GIMP is Win 7 compat yet and I don't know the size requirements on it, but if you want to down platform, I'd get windows 7 proffessional, minimally, since you're wanting to do GIMP, I'ds go with at least 4GB RAM, but that makes your windows 64-bit insead of 32-bit...research on sims nao.

CODE
GIMP should run on any NT-based version of Windows (NT4, 2000, XP or Vista). Older GIMP versions (2.0.x) could also work with older versions of Windows such as Windows 95 but they are not supported anymore. The amount of memory can be an important factor, especially if you intend to work on large images. A minimum of 128 MB of RAM is recommended, but the more RAM the better.

CODE
QUESTION

Is The Sims 3 and its expansions compatible with Windows 7?

ANSWER

Because Windows 7 was released after the Sims 3, it is not an officially supported OS. In our various tests, however, the Sims 3 and the Sims 3 Collector's Edition have proven to be compatible with Windows 7.

The Sims 3 World Adventures does officially support the Windows 7 OS.

We recommend you keep your game up to date via the Sims 3 Game Launcher to ensure compatibility with Windows 7.

Quite honestly, I'd like to say it doesn't matter, but I'd like to have it before I go to college, so it can't be, like, 1000-2000 I think. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) ;

Unless what I'm looking for is in that range. I have no idea. v_v;

Geez, if you're gonna spend 1000 go with a mac. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) If a laptop costs 2000, definitely not worth it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif)

okay....this is a little tricky.....

Your requirements:

Windows 7 (Professional- costs more, but has more tools for running programs at older settings)
- Runs GIMP
- Runs Sims 3 - Sims 3 is semi- win 7 compat
for pictures, you want a good video card (well gimp also needs a good video card)

Large HD - at least what? 1TB (1000 GB)?

also screen size.

With MAcs, you get an all in one, and macs are better for graphics, but repairs are a poain in the trumpet, so you need to be very careful with it if you do. you can go into a mac store and they will repair it but it can take up to 2-4 weeks and is not guarunteed to be repaired or matching in color.

Well I know. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) I can't get a mac. I won't understand it, and it's probably not portable. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif)

And I really don't want to spend more than 400... I don't want to be dead when I get a laptop. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif)

Okay we've surprisingly already moved into the portion where I don't know where you're talking about, so SURE. That sounds good. 8D

I'm not particularly tech savvy (which is why my dad is the one who looked into laptops for me). But my friend has a laptop and she runs Sims 3 with an expansion pack or two, and I'm pretty sure it runs just fine. I could ask her what her computer is, and you could go from there? I know it's HP. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) But like I said, I'm not tech savvy; I notice how pretty a laptop is, is all. Also, my dad always gets laptops from tiger.com. You can get them cheaper there, and they run excellent. (At least the ones he's ordered have. And he's ordered 4 that I know of.)

... That may be the same site my dad told me about. He said something about Tiger Direct. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif)

Anyway, please ask your friend, if you can. :B I've heard HP is good, so I'd like one of those. *flashingly dances near her earlier link*

Tiger.com can be cheaper, but they also use 3rd brand parts sometimes.

and microsoft has a free XBox360 deal if you spend more than $699 on a computer with windows 7. LOLz

Well, what I want is something that can run Sims 3 and GIMP and still run at a reasonable speed.

... If that makes sense.

Oooh. I shall look at that. :D

Yeah, that's the one!

Alright. I texted her. Gotta wait for her to respond. >-> *stares at phone*

My dad ordered two laptops from there, and they lasted 4 or 5 years. Then they finally died and he had to get new ones, and they run really well from what I know. He's always playing games on them, and my sister never complains (the second laptop he was ordering was for her).

Ah! She replied before I even hit send. She said "a dm4." I'll look it up. Ah yes. This is it, I believe.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/7875...4_Notebook.html

Okay, this is what she said.

"I only have one expansion pack, but it works. If [you're] wanting to play higher-end games, [you] may want to invest in a better graphics card, but the one it comes with works fine for Sims 3."

So there's an answer as far as running Sims 3 goes. I have no idea about GIMP, though. :\

Odang.

Well, if it runs Sims 3, that's mainly what I want here. Looks like the only difference between that one and the one I was looking at is the hard drive space. Hmm...

I'll have to do more research about the two of those. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) If her's is more expensive, and runs Sims, then I'd want that, I think...? I'm terrible at this kinda thing. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif)

I've played Sims with her on her new one versus her old one (which was like, 7 years old and living on life support). Her old one had Sims 2; it would freeze up just trying to change it from day to night. Sims 3 on her new, we'd blink and it was dark. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) It runs pretty well and she takes it with her. The only problem I can see is that I couldn't find it on Tiger.com. :\ So, the price there is probably what you'll have to go with if you get it.

Found it on OfficeMax for, like, $573.

It runs well? :D Cuz... Here's the reason I want mine replaced.

I can't have the sound on my computer. Like, I'm not talking "Oh, kay, mute the sound." Nope. I have to full blown go into the Control Panel and disable the sound from working. =|

You can imagine what playing Sims without sound is like. And my anime/youtube video watching tendencies are dying as well due to this problem. D:

So I'd like something I can take to college with me, but also put everything from this TERRIBLE PIECE OF POOP on.

I would strongly recommend a Mac.

You'll understand it right away. It's not that complicated. It's just superior to Windows.

I agree with Oscar. Mac's are a bit more expensive but I really do think it's worth it. If you're worried about not being able to understand it, it's REALLY simple and easy to figure everything out.
