I've been playing FFXI for about a year now, and am always looking for anyone who wants to talk about it!
It's a dated game now, just having past it's 8th anniversary (I missed getting an anniversary ring) but still has a fairly large number of registered players there. I guess if you play or have played, introducing your character, server and primary job is a good way to say hello! Agardemers of Windurst.Carbuncle Dragoon 75 Paladin 51 Samurai 39 White Mage 32 Monk 30 etc etc etc. |

I'm going to try to keep it appealing to you while you're not playing, so when you DO have time you can. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/emot-iia.png) |

Do you have to pay to play after you buy the software?

Yeah, it's subscription based. You can buy the software off Steam now for $15. It comes with the main game, all four expansions, plus the additional content they've released since they stopped doing expansions. Subscription fees are about $13/month Canadian. Do your own math for the US.
If you like Final Fantasy... I guess I'd say it's worth looking at. You'll find many games that followed it did similar things, like Guild Wars. Again, it's kinda dated so the game mechanics are kinda funky sometimes. I enjoy it though; I love being a Dragoon. |

Yeah that'd be awesome, I could help get you started. I have been playing incredibly sporatic lately, but I know generally what's going on in the beginning. :D

Huge Final Fantasy fanboy and I gave it a shot when it was released but I didn't really like it. Europe got it so late that all the prices were pretty high and the servers weren't too populated anymore, at least not the lower level parts. Leveling was very frustrating. It was pretty slow and relied too much on parties.
It's a shame I couldn't like it more but it just wasn't for me. Either way I'm staying optimistic about XIV, I just wish they kept the traditional FF classes like dragoon, black mage and white mage instead of renaming them or changing them up. I think a lot of the appeal of an FF MMO is actually playing as those classes |

I dont know about the original FF games, but naming the class Lancer over Dragoon in FFXIV isn't that bad. I know Lancer was in the original FFT, right? So its not like they are making up new classes for that particular one. Though I don't know about Conjurer or whatever.

Yeah that one isn't so bad. It doesn't seem as "dragoon-y" as it's XI equivalent to me but not enough has been announced about it to really know

You guts are telling me. I started ffxi to main dragoon, and I don't like the naming inconsistency though to be fair the job in xiv is NOT a dragoon. They don't seem to do any jumping nor can be sure the traditional winged armet will be included in the game. I hope it is but I'm afraid it'll not be a serious piece of equipment. If you didn't like ffxi several years ago we noticed that the ge might have been fixed up a bit to appeal to more people, so it might be worth trying again.

Nah the only connection is they use spears. It's closer to a dark knight than anything but all the classes seem mixed up.
I heard about the changes but my discs are all over the place and I don't really want to buy it again. I'm just holding out for XIV. |

While I respect FFXI in general, I still can't forgive SquareEnix for using a numbered installment on a MMORPG (what would have been the problem with just Final Fantasy Online?). Especially now that they want to pull the same trick with FFXIV.

This is basically the XIV thread now anyways, so..
Was looking up cutscenes and saw this video a guild was using for recruitment. Shows each starter cutscene for the city story lines. Its a music video, but its actually interesting and the cutscenes are of good quality. Also no linkin park. I want this even more now. |

darn Final Fantasy XIV has been getting some horrible reviews, can't say I'm surprised after playing the beta but a 4 from gamespot? That seems a little harsh.
I was kind of annoyed that the PS3 and PC releases were so far apart but it looks like I may have dodged a bullet. Although a big complaint about the game was that it felt unpolished and who knows by the time it does come out for the PS3 a lot of the stuff may be fixed, I'll keep an eye out |

Bad reviews just mean that aren't bad games. Just means it isn't garbage like WoW or Halo. Comparing to music, I'd rather not listen to Tik Tok or Miley Cyrus, even if it is constantly on radio stations.
I've seen some gameplay, looks good enough. The story, exploring, and gear is what its about. Not the gameplay from the first couple of weeks. |

The thing is Halo and WoW, along with Miley Cyrus and Kesha get such high sales and whatever because of publicity. hype and marketing. Final Fantasy is a huge franchise with equal marketing power in Japan (and a fair amount abroad) but it was still this badly received by critics. Of course you don't have to listen to what they say, reviewers can't speak for you personally, I know I've enjoyed games that reviewers have blasted and hated a lot of games they've praised but I'm just saying if it's as bad as a lot of people are saying I may have dodged a bullet.
A lot of the complaints have been echoed by people who have played the game too but like I said it's still in it's infancy and Square-Enix may polish it up a bit. Feel free to give it a shot and see for yourself though |

FFXIV isn't that well advertised, not here at least. If anything all the FF fans work against it because they are mad you aren't a blonde hair boy that looks like a girl who fights an emo villian with easy rewards and cutscenes every 5 seconds.
FF online has always had bad reviews because its an MMO that doesn't try to be WoW. Even though that changes a little with XIV. I hate FF and can't wait for this. |
