I just got through watching The Secret Life of Bees on DVD last night. I thought it was absolutely amazing! For those of you who don't know, it's set in the time where segregation was still in the United States. Here, I'll just type what's on the back of the case for you guys:
"Queen Latifah and Dakota Fanning head stellar enseble cast in this "wonderful film about family, independence and the transcendent power of love" (Minneapolis Star Tribune) based on the acclaimed best-selling novel. To escape her cruel, angry father --- and discover the truth about her late mother's past--- 14-year-old Lily Owens (Fanning) flees with her caregiver and friend Rosaleen (Jenifer Hudson) to a South Carolina town where she's taken in by the bee-keeping Boatwright sisters (Latifah, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo). Surrounded by the unexpected love, grace and spirituality she encounters there, Lily forms a bond with each of these uniquely gifted women and discovers that sometimes you must leave home in order to find it." (Disclaimer: I didn't write the above summary, and have no claim to it.) Anyway, it's not really so much a spiritual statement as it is a statement of freedom---of all kinds, not just freedom from segregation. I hope those of you who have seen it will, watch it. Just so you know, it's PG-13, due to Thematic material, a small amount of violence, and like one curse word. However, if you're not comfortable with death, then by all means, don't watch it. Please discuss, if you've seen it, want to see it, or even if you don't want to. :) |
