A very long time..I think its 2 years in it's crib and you can't take it out or give it gifts.
Then the crawling stage is another 2 years, but you can give it gifts. Then it walks around, goes to festivals, and talks more and will stay like that forever.

As for the friendship events..hm..there really aren't many. I don't know if it counts, but there is one to activate the Goddess festival thing. It's not really a "friendship" event, but it isn't a marriage based thing. *shrugs*

- Have the church on the island. So make sure Alisa and Nathan aren't absent, otherwise you won't have anywhere to get married at.
- Have all of the main characters
- Have the second bed from Chen's store (10,000 G) and a fully upgraded house
- Have your choice for spouse up to red heart, and see all of their heart events
