I think very few did. It's honestly like, the worst pick the author could've gone with if they wanted to sit down and complete a Harvest Moon game. Mostly 'cause it drags on forever, and also because of weird things like this.

It really is. I think I got to chapter three before I called it quits for good, and it took me several real life years to dredge up the motivation to get that far.

All the different kinds of animals and the bull to impregnate cows were interesting ideas, but making the cows stop giving milk after 40 days was a terrible game mechanic. It really screwed things up.

Special edition has less years than the other. I think I got to the second last chapter.
I can relate to that situation well. I don't think I've sold my goat who can't give milk anymore to reimpregnate my cow. I didn't like the scene of them leaving. A have a bunch of roosters too. I need to fix that when I get back. :(
But I don't like having to reimpregnate my cow for milk. It's just annoying. >-<

Lol oh dear. I remember a lot of people just spent their days sleeping to continue on the story. The game had a lot of random events though so I it always seemed eventful for me.

You want to know what I did? I used the cheat that filled your inventory with stuff, sold all of the extra or unnecessary things, and lived off of my millions while just having as much fun with the game as possible. I didn't have to worry if my cows stopped producing milk, because I didn't need the money in the first place. I didn't grow anything on my farm other than trees, because fuck that shit. I raised lots of chickens and ducks and my stupid little kid and was making serious headway on turning him from a jock into an artist/musician, and.... yeah. It still wasn't as fun as most HM titles, and if I hadn't given in and played the game entirely legit instead, I would've given up way early on.
