Aside from make the house seem a bit livelier, do pets have any sort of effect on the game, or are they just there to take up space like your spouse? Considering how friggin' long it takes to befriend the things in this game, I was hoping that there'd be some sort of reward for, say, getting a puppy for Chase or a kitty for Candace. Or maybe she'd like a bear.

From memory, I don't think they really do anything. Maybe you get a few comments from the villagers/family, but I don't find it worth it considering how long it takes to befriend them. I think they're more fun in Animal March, though.

Yeah, Animal March pets are great. You can teach them tricks, walk them, pit them in competition, and they don't take nearly as long to befriend. Plus I fed them my leftover treasure maps.

I do recall the candidates in AP (dunno bout ToT) preferring certain pets... does ToT have a snake? (I sent my copy to Natsume Monday so I can't go check myself.) Or a frog or a turtle? I figure I can at least try to get hilariously inappropriate pets for my spouse. HEY RENEE SAY HELLO TO WAYLON SLITHERS HE'S A WATER MOCCASIN.

Like Charmy said, the pets unfortunately have no effect in ToT. I don't think they recieve any comments.

darn. Seems like they kind of went that way ever-so-gradually since BTN, I guess:

BTN, you could catch wild animals and show them to villagers.
MM, you could befriend wild animals and show them to villagers.
ToT, you could befriend wild animals and adopt them as useless pets.
AP, you could befriend wild animals and adopt them as pets with a purpose.
GrB, you could capture and sell insects.

Well, at least they haven't gotten to making time kill off your pets like it does your livestock.

Still want hilariously inappropriate pets, though. Ah well, in AP, Maya can be happy with our useful rabbit and squirrel, and the Wizard can enjoy his boar.

I'm pretty sure Tree of Tranquility has a turtle. Not so sure about the snake or frog though.
It'd be scary waking up with a huge bear staring at you and your spouse. o-o

Fixed.

I could've sworn ToT had a frog that came out when it rained. I thought MM did too, but it hasn't rained yet in my new boy file, so I can't check.

Even better, you come back from carrying your newborn son/daughter around and find a full-grown bear in the kid's crib.

People always do that too me. T____T

Since I don't bother about befriending them and I haven't played in quite a while, I'm not sure.

I'd tie a bib on it and make it drink it's milk from a bottle. This is what real babies are made of. B]

What you could do in BTN you could also do in 64.

Also, in Twin Villages you can befriend a variety of wild animals who will give you free stuff once a week or so if your friendship is high. You don't take any of them home, though.

You also get to keep an owl as a pet. It can carry you down from the summit of the mountain.

Guess I just didn't run across em yet in 64.

In ToTT, does the owl bring you dead mice every so often? Okay, I already know the answer to that one, but it would be... it would be.

I also forgot the pets dig up stuff in AP when you walk them, although it's fairly infrequent, and not usually that great. Still a nice way to earn a bit of extra pocket change while enjoying your walks.

It is one of those little things that are necessary for some and unnecessary for others. I like having pets in the game, but my brother thinks they get in the way of the door too often. The pets really serve no other purpose.
