So, a number of us are in university now or returned to high school. How is the new year treating you? :)

I'm personally loving my new university and my classes. I haven't felt so good in a while.

Ran into a bunch of friends from high school who I haven't seen in maybe 5 years.

One of them was all "I just finished my MBA, I'm taking classes until I get a nice job"... Screw him.

I blame the freshmen boys in the front ensemble and the sophomore boys that act worse than the two year olds and eight year olds that I've babysat for my would-be-enjoyable-but-there's-that-one-little-detail high school life.

Does the guy just have a lot of money to be able to take classes after that? I'd be irritated as well :| Heck, I still get jealous hearing what other people are doing, but I imagine on some level people are jealous of me too.

It actually doesn't bother me at all, it was just a little surprising.

I know he's worked since high school, but he's also done studies abroad in Germany and China, so who knows how it gets funded. I'm pretty sure his parents aren't too hard off (I've been to his cottage), but it's really none of my business.

This is my second year in college and it is going pretty good.

All my classes are great. The teachers are all awesome. But my favorite thing is my Social Psychology class. That class is just awesome. I very much enjoy the material and the teacher in that class is hilarious and very entertaining(in a way that helps you learn the material).

My American Literature class is good, I mean, I like what we're learning, but the readings are incredibly boring and crazy long. -_- Guess it's just the time period that's boring to me. Which is from the beginnings of America to 1820.

I then have a Cravings and Addiction class(also Psychology related)and this one is fun, too. We talk about interesting things or others mention how drunk they love to get or their experiences with smoking. I even helped my brother sort of quit smoking after learning some stuff there. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) SORT OF. Let's see if he keeps it up, but I doubt it, haha. It's just the teacher has long and boring powerpoints in that class...

I'm also taking an introductory statistics class and I can't say much about that class. I'm pretty neutral to it. It's okay and I'm doing math again(not happy about that), but whatever. It's useful. Actually, I'm mad at the teacher cuz I got back my first homework assignment and I got some problems wrong, but it makes no sense why I got 'em wrong. We're doing sigma summation and I summed up the entire values. That's all I had to do, yet it was wrong?! I've added it three times and I keep getting 30!

And then I'm taking an introductory class to literary studies and that one is a lot of fun! The short stories we're reading are great. But this first paper we have to do seems odd. And I decided to take it online cuz I wanted two classes a day again.

Powerpoint is the bane of proper learning. I've only seen it used effectively in ONE class.

Yeah, it is annoying. And three of my teachers this year love using them. Well, except two of them actually do it right. They give you the info through powerpoint and then they go through everything with great detail and examples and what not. But dunno if that's much better. At least they're not solely relying on powerpoint like my Cravings teacher. -_-

I have an amusing power point fail story.

Last year, I had to take speech and health, each of which is only a semester long. I took them in that order.

My speech teacher, for the final project, gave us a lesson about using power points. He said "never quote a power point directly. only use it for notes to remind you of what you should talk about and expand from there."

My health teacher quoted his power points verbatum. including typos.

Umm, but how about you, Saffy. How do all your professors teach?

I find all of my professors to be a lot more energetic than I am used to. They put forth a lot of effort into keeps students interested and focused on what is being taught. The professor for my graduate course maintains a class discussion throughout and tends to throw in a few witty comments now and then. They're enjoyable :)

It's been nice so far, but who knows how it'll go, three days really doesn't give me a great impression. Sure, the teachers seem nice, but I'm sure I'll be cursing them when I get pages of homework. I already had to read some boring chapters today, boring.

I'm curious, do you get teachers that do powerpoint often? Or how do they teach? Cuz it seems I've been getting many powerpoint lovers...

Last year I had 4 of 10 courses taught on the blackboard, the rest was PP. PP can be useful in graphics-intensive classes where it would be difficult/lengthy to draw all the diagrams and models (Materials Engineering, for example). The best use I found was in Statistics. The prof kept all the notes and example questions in PP, displayed above the blackboard, and then he'd solve the problems on the blackboard. Because the students didn't have to copy down each question (just the answers), he was able to get through a lot more work than if it was all blackboard notes.

Overall, I prefer notes being written on the blackboard because the prof can't rush things, and you actually see how he (or she) solves the problems. This term, 3 of my 5 classes use this method.

On the other hand, my Mathematical Methods prof from last year, just copied the textbook word for word - from memory - and ignored most questions. He also happened to be the author of the textbook, so it was as impressive as it was redundant.

Um, anyway. School is awesome. I love having my mind stimulated. Even the core classes are invigorating. Either I'm just a nerd or I don't know. But yeah, it's going great. :)

Mine is going very well in regards to my classes, not so well in regards to catching up with coursework. I will need to work intensively throughout the day for the next week or so to get up to speed, especially with art, in which I am impeded by my lack of organisation (which I really need to sort out tomorrow) and technical ability (which hopefully I will improve over time with practise, but as it stands I can't paint for toffee).

I'm pleased that I've been able to get back into mathematics. I've grasped the new topics so far with no problems at all.
Also, we're finally finally doing something really interesting in science. I've wanted to look at special relativity for ages and now we are because it fits into the work we're doing on speed/momentum/velocity/etc. in the physics side of the course.

Unfortunately my Philosophy & Ethics teachers still suck, so I have to spend all of my remaining free time trying to teach myself. Which is sort of difficult to manage given that I'm also supposed to be teaching myself Government & Politics with no teacher assistance whatsoever.
