Maybe you could join as a sort of an "intern" in somebody else's shop? Maybe see what they do and have them explain the ropes for you. Then you could take on some sets once you're ready and THEN you will gain some, uhh, customers depending on how well you did on the sets.

If people like your work, they will ask for it. If your work isn't good enough, you're not going to get customers, as simple as that. You can't really ask for someone who is good at this type a thing and take half the credit for it.
