I was just curious. I always nickname my Pokemon when I play, I like to know what other people name their Pokemon. I also like to know if anyone who plays the games nowadays even bothers (especially people around my age). I couldn't find any topics about this already, so I decided to make my own!
Anyway . . . Do you name your Pokemon? What do you name them? Why? Any names you really like? I'll go through a few of my nicknames - I just started some new game files. I have a charmander named Pepper. I usually name my charmander Firestorm, but this one was a girl so I decided to change things up a bit. I named my chimchar Firestorm instead. I named my pikachu Jupiter. 'Cause the Roman name for Zeus is Jupiter . . . and he throws lightning bolts! I totally blanked and ended up calling my mudkip Pisces. Yeah. The fish constellation. The only other one that comes to mind right now is Artemis, my poochyena. I named it that because it's a dark-type and I associate dark-types with the moon . . . and Artemis is a moon goddess. She's a hunting goddess too, so that works great for poochyena. |

Well, I always name my pokemon... but I don't really stick to the same few nicknames. However, for a long time (read: until the 3rd Generation came out and ruined everything) I had this weird habit of giving at least one pokemon in every game a name that had "luna" in it. In one of my Red versions it was a Pidgey I never evolved. In another game it was my Blastoise (I think its name was Lunalelle).
As for others... in my Silver version I have a Chikorita named Sunny, a Skarmory named Skarmy, A Sunflora named Flora, and a Bellossom named Oddish. (I know. Wasn't I a genius at ten? /saaaarcaaasm/) In Pearl, my pokemons' names are this: Empoleon - Athrun Staraptor - Tsubasa (meaning 'wings') Pachirisu - Kotonoha Roselia - Rosalind Gyarados - Ruby Ninetales - Fiona And in my active Blue Version, they're: Charizard - Koharu Weepinbell - Aphrodite (because Weepinbell is a venus flytrap and Venus is... yeah. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) ) Sandslash - Sunako (meaning 'sand child') Dragonair - Skye Clefable - Tsukina (a pretty name which means 'moon') And... Mew. Mew is just Mew though. I don't usually give nicknames to legendaries. It just never seemed right to. |

I always nickname my Pokémon! And it irks me when I have traded or event Pokémon, and I can't nickname them. My Mew, Jirachi, and Arceus can't be renamed, so they're stuck with those eyesore all-caps names. D: Ew. Shaymin, on the other hand, is actually mine, but I kept the name Shaymin because it fits the little cutie. I did "nickname" it so that it wasn't in all-caps, though.
A lot of times, I have a theme. Like in SoulSilver, they're all named after Beatles songs: Quilava: Maxwell Bayleef: Mackenzie Vaporeon: Eleanor Ampharos: Lucy Pidgeotto: Mr. Kite Sandslash: Billy Shears They're all in Japanese, though, so I had to be sort of creative; five characters can only do so much. I wish I had more girls in my team, though. :[ Most names from Beatles songs are girls' names... Ah well. But other times, I just name them whatever. In Platinum, I have an Empoleon named Tango. It's named after the picture book And Tango Makes Three, which is about two male penguins who take care of an egg. The baby penguin that hatches is named Tango. It's been the most challenged book in the country for something like four years. I'm just so /edgy/. B] </yeahrightwhatever> My Rapidash is named Pepper, because Pepper is hot and so is Rapidash. I have a habit of always naming a fire pokémon Pepper. It's a cute name. And the Luxray is Socks. Standard for kitty-like Pokémon. Generally my nicknames aren't very intimidating and are sorta... well, cute. Like my Giratina. Its name is Fluffy! :D |

The most "original" nickname that I ever used was for my Riolu that evolved into a Lucario. I called him Aura.

I name every new Pokemon I get/hatch. Every time. They basically get named whatever comes to mind or sounds good at the time. As an example, a month or two ago I tried my hand at just hatching a zillion eggs to see how long it'd take me to get a shiny. One box full of Mareeps ended up being named Insanity, Adlez, Buckeye, Lambchop, Griddle, Tim, Puyo, Elli, Nibbles, Ezz, Lime, Rice, Smurf, Q, PeterOlson, Nazz, Pingle, Tweed, Fowlmouth, Siya, Wooly, Mais, Zanzibar, Accountant, Margaret, Kyung Soon, Malcolm, Francis, Lois, and Hal. I'm more or less completely unsure how I got most of those.

Man, you mentioned the name Q and that reminded me... I always name my Unown after the letter they represent. (And I always catch every darn Unown variation there is because I am weird like that.)
I also nickname every pokemon I catch/hatch. I just didn't want to inundate everyone with a list of over 600 names. (And those are only the ones I have currently, if I still had some of my old files from way back when, there'd be more.) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) I also did a similar thing with hatching Eevees, though I was actually trying to hatch a female one, not a shiny. (I've found there's a higher chance if you breed your female eevee with a ditto... but even then it's not 100%.) I don't even want to go into all the nicknames in that box... there are just too many. >.> |

They all get names. If they were a bastard to catch, they get named accordingly. I have an entire box of Pokémon named things like Bastard, Fat Bastard, Icy Bastard, etc.

Now that I finally have all six of my Pokemon games up and running, I can actually list some names! I won't list them all, I'd be here all day. I'll just list what I think is the best of the bunch, and my starters.
Pepper = Charmander Galapagos = Squirtle (After the Galapagos Tortoise) Pisces = Mudkip (After the fish constellation) Evergreen = Treeko Firestorm = Chimchar Adelie = Piplup (After the Adelie penguin) ----- Jupiter = Pikachu (After the Roman name for Zeus) Artemis = Poochyena (After the Greek moon goddess) Foxtrot = Ralts (The whole line seems to involve dancing) Schooner = Wingull (After a type of boat) Murmur = Starly (A group of starlings is a 'murmuration') Oracle = Shinx (It just occured to me that the final form looks sort of like the oracle in A Neverending Story) Cucumber = Psyduck (I've read that kappas love cucumbers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) ) Apollo = Pidgey (After the rocket, not the sun god) Blackout = Pikachu Fenris = Poochyena (After the giant wolf in Norse mythology) Scuttle = Wingull (Uh, Disney reference for the win?) Fantasia = Shroomish (They look like the little dancing mushrooms in Fantasia) Starshine = Shinx Pendragon = Abra (There's a magician couple called the Pendragons) --- Still a long post. Over the years, or at least, ever since Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, I've laid off on naming Pokémon in a serious sit-down game, but if it's one that I'm feeling whimsical or basing off of a character, then I'll either name every one I catch or just the important ones. I stopped naming after in one of the R/S/E games when I named my Torchic something dumb, it evolved into Blaziken and I changed it so many times (the only one I remember being Kaziblen) that I think I eventually just changed it back to Blaziken. Too much trouble for its own good, and such a good Pokémon!
For example, anyway, in my current SS file, I'm attempting to base my future team off of a character I made once. Ony two 'mons in my entire game are nicknamed! They would be: Wren the female Fearow (Spearow being a small bird, the original Wren was a stuck-up, prissy, jealous Spearow who constantly pick at her feathers). and Arak the male Ariados (obviously taken from SpinARAK, I imagine an actual Spinarak's dialect consisting of a variations of hisses, clicks of pincers, and "arakakakak"s. Arak is supposed to be a trouble-maker who never listens to his trainer but eventually comes to obey him). The others on that team would eventually be: Jersey the female Venusaur (Jersey is a green color. Bulbasaur is green, ha-cha-cha. First 'mon who adores her trainer, is very bubbly, but very naďve). Cecile the female Misdreavus [haven't decided whether to evolve her or not] (Cecile was just a pretty name at the time. Cecile was one of those "crush on her trainer" Pokémon who'd do anything for them). Spike the male Cacturne (Obvious name reasons. Trainer was running out of creativity, I guess. Spike was always very devious and quiet, but always did as he was told. Secretly, though, he planned to flee from his trainer to get stronger 'cause he's a jerk). Volc the female Camerupt ('Cause there's volcanoes… in their humps. Yeah. Volc is that slow, Land Before Time Spike 'mon, but quick in battle). Others I'm either too lazy to look up or forgot. c: In HG, I will most likely end up naming everything something French, because I'm cool like that. |

I guess I can put some of my HG and SS nicknames up here. I seem to be a bit braindead this time around though . . .
Chimera = Quilava HoneySpice = Chikorita Luminous = Flaaffy Zephyr = Skiploom Murkfish = Quagsire Nightlight = Mareep Chaffinch = Pidgey Puppet = Gastly And I can't think of any other good ones right now. =/ |

I'm always sure to give each and every pokémon I catch a nickname, unless I'm putting it up for trade. In my party right now, I've got:
Fingal - Feraligatr. He was going to be O'Flahertie, but of course, that didn't fit. Kagemi - Kadabra Phoenix - Ho-oh Prancer - Weepinbell. When I caught it as a Bellsprout, I figured it looked like it was prancing, hence Prancer. Brockling - Golem. Manry - Pigeot. Another notable group would be my group of Eevees and their evolutions. My first Eevee's name is Kuya. I've been thinking of making him a second Umbreon. Akemi - Espeon Mizuki - Umbreon Hino - Flareon Denki - Jolteon Umesuke - Vaporeon. I considered Kaito, but Umesuke just made me giggle too much. Plum-esque, almost. Midori - Leafeon-to-be Izo - Glaceon-to-be Other pokémon that come to mind are my Onix named Brocktree, Ditto named Holmes, Growlithe named Watson, Togetic named Watsukiss, and my Caterpie that has yet to become a Butterfree named Tolby. (Plus a bunch of Unowns named after Sherlock Holmes stories such as my OrangePips, Carbuncle, Scarlet, Bachelor, Identity, and TwistedLip.) EDIT: I should probably explain some of these a bit, I suppose! Fingal came about since I started playing the game around when I began reading a biography for Oscar Wilde. I figured I'd take one of his middle names, and since O'Flahertie didn't fit, Fingal came next. Kagemi was mostly me putting together sounds into something pretty. At that point I was having fun with -mi names, and I was thinking 'kage' had something to do with shadows and/or reflections or something. Still haven't checked up on that actually, but I liked the name for him nonetheless. (And though it's a made up name as far as I know, I think I could roughly translate it as 'beautiful shadow/reflection/whatever that 'kage' part was.) Phoenix was probably one of the most uncreative. Perhaps it's an obvious allusion to the Ace Attorney series. (And I just couldn't resist with such a phoenix-like pokémon! And since it comes to mind, I've also got a Pincer named Wright just because I've got a Scyther named Edgeworth.) Brockling came about after I remembered naming my Onix in Blue Brocktree. At the time, I was simply naming pokémon after Redwall characters, and I realized 'Brock' was in the name Brocktree. Both Onix and Geodude acquired their names because of their relation to Brock, Onix getting the Brocktree because he's more tree-ish, Geodude getting Brockling because he's smaller. Manry has no actual story for it other than that it makes me chuckle. I also have a Pidgey in Blue named Manry. Most of my Eevees were named for what they're associated with. Generally they're all names, sounds, or words I think I remember, but I could be wrong about too. Pretty much the same kind of deal as Kagemi. Umesuke is by far the most foolish one, though. Holmes, Watson, and Watsukiss will be blamed on these two images: http://feriowind.deviantart.com/art/SH-PKM...7679&qo=151 http://feriowind.deviantart.com/art/SH-PKM...7679&qo=152 Since Watson was to be my Arcanine-to-be, Togepi became Watsukiss. This means Ampharos will probably be John or Doctor, depending. Tolby was named after our Tolby here at the forums. And finally, since Unowns are just a bunch of enigmas, I figured I'd just give them names after my favourite mystery stories! EDIT2: Bah. Kagemi's not a Kadabra. Kagemi's an Alakazam! |

I call mine after a bunch of things, usually world mythology or just a name that fits. Just whatever's fitting. To give examples of the non-myth names, Blastoise is of course Gamera, and then there's WaBuffett the philanphropist Wobuffett, and I also have a Butterfree called Tolby (<3), and Muk and Grimer are The Smooze and Smooze Jr. respectively, and Quagsire is Quigley from A Series of Unfortunate Events, etc.

Swinging by again and trying to think if I've come with any good names lately.
I named my four Nidorans: Lancelot, Guinevere, Gawain, and Ragnelle. I named my Growlithe: Cerberus. I named my Vulpix: Izuna. I named my Electrike: Gmrok (Neverending Story reference!). I named my Stunky: Handstand. And I'm blanking now. Oh well. |
