Comfort Games Options

What games do you love to pick up time and time again? You know, those games that give you that warm feeling whenever you play and you always enjoy the experience? :)

For me there's Earthbound and Lunar that first come to mind. Both RPGs, but I just absolutely enjoy every bit of playing them. There's certain charm and feel that is absolute bliss. In Earthbound, the game starts with Onett and Twoson, both of which I heavily explored as a kid when I never understood what an RPG was. Lunar was the the main RPG series I really got into and I personally like to credit it for drawing me into game development. Though I've beaten Lunar twice already and its sequel once, I still desperately want to get around to playing them again. The beautiful sprite work, the story, just all of it comes together so nicely. There's some other games I'd love to play again, but at the moment I'm heavily into playing Earthbound again.

I guess comfort games play a lot on nostalgia. You can just forget everything else and enjoy the moment.

Definitely Yoshi's Island. Sometimes other games like Mega Man X, Kirby Super Star, and Donkey Kong Country 2. My SNES and Game Boy are kept accessible for whenever I just wanna get away from a lot of stuff.

Rocket Knight Adventures, Astro Boy: Omega Factor, EarthBound, Turtles In Time, PSO, Metal Slug, Umihara Kawase, and Taiko Drum Master are all games that are pretty easy pick up and play happy fun times to me. Naturally there's a lot more... but I'm lazy. So not right now.

When I think about it, they're pretty much all games from when I was little. Except one or two fairly recent games.

Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening- This game was truly amazing when I played it. I was addicted to A Link to the Past at the time, and Awakening felt like just as good a game that you could take with you wherever.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's island & Yoshi's Story- My brother and I used to play these before we stopped talking, so it has a sentimental value for me...

The Legend of Zelda- When I'm in a bad mood, this is the perfect getaway. I can go for hours playing this.

Super Mario Bros.- (See Zelda description)

Mother 3- I guess the ending would be the comfort part for me...

Fire Emblem: Fuuin No Tsurugi- This is probably one of my most absolute favorite games of all time. When I was in 7th grade, and was extremely depressed over something, and was home schooled and had no friends, this game took my mind off of everything for almost the whole year.

Eternal Sonata: Just the beauty of the game's music and scenery is enough to comfort me off the bat. But the story itself is really the best part of it.

Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations- Oh God. The ending of this game is probably one of the few games that almost brought me to eye foaming tears when finishing.

Mega Man Zero: 4- It was so cool how Zero was really back like in his days in Mega Man X. And the ending was truly the way Zero was supposed to go out.

Phantasy Star Online- Well, this is pretty much the game I play when I'm bored. Since there's never a time when it just plain isn't fun.

Wind Waker- This is the game that my sister and I used to play all the time. And really, it was what made me as close as I am to her. And I always am reminded of that when I play it.

There are more, like Mega Man: ZX and Star Fox 64, but that's all for now.

Well, Harvest Moon Back to Nature. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) It's one of the things I thank my brother for. Since he was the one that picked it up at the store. And I was the one that got hooked to it. >3> Although, there's a certain discomfort when I play. My old file f my first Harvest Moon game was deleted from a friend by accident..... ;__;

But I also love to go back and play Paper Mario. <3 It isn't an extremely had game but it is pure joy for me. Too bad I haven't found a copy of Thousan Year Door yet.....

Then there's also Pikmin.... 2. The time limit on the first is a nice challenge, but I love to muck around and do whatever when I'm still on a mission. That's why I seem to enjoy the sequal more. Although I'm still up to the last cavern and haven't actually won it yet, it's a game I've been playing over the years. And I didn't have to pay for the game either! Too bad there's no actual cover for it then and there's no instruction booklet to snoop through. DX

I wouldn't personally qualify that as a comfort game on the grounds that it just came out. Perhaps in a few years if you've picked it up a few times then it would qualify. I just don't think it works yet D:

Any Harvest Moons are my comfort games really. I also like watching the Final Fantasy with Yuna in it... Sorry, I forget the number. But I've never played it, too hard for me. :P

Also any Super Mario games I love.

HM 64 always makes me feel warm and fuzzy, and I think about how me and sister would spend the whole day playing when we were younger. :D

and the older mario party games too. They have good memories attached to them.

Hmm, an older game would probably be Pokemon Red version or Super Smash Bros, the first one. I remember my brother got Earthbound and he played it and love it, but I never quite understood the game. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) It seemed weird but cool. I was too young, anyways.

Oh and I also feel comforted when I play Tales of Symphonia, and Rune Factory Frontier, I have a thing for RPGs I guess. >.>

Tales Of Symphonia is great, too. But I wouldn't call it a comfort game.


Oh yeah, and Shining Force and Ristar are good ones, too.

Every Holiday I would go over to my cousins and all the kids would play games in his room. Me, my brother and my cousin would always play video games while the other watched or did something else. They were fun times, so because of that a lot of various old games hold that time for me. The games include:

Turtles in Time
Super Mario All Stars (specifically Super Mario Bros 3)
Power Rangers
Various other SNES games.

As time went on we still did this, it was less fun, but sometimes it felt the same and so some games from new systems made their way into those memories.

Glover
Spiderman 64
Various other 64 games

Super Mario 64 and StarFox 64 also make the above list, but they have memories all on their own. More immediate family memories. With my brother, sister, and even occasionally my parents. Those games where awesome.

I had some great times with Sega as well. Most Sonic games were with my brother and sister, and eventually playthroughs on my own. But I have some really fond memories of old X-men games and Streets of Rage with my oldest friend.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Powerstone 2, Rush, Jet Radio, Grandia II, Code Veronica I beat these games countless times with my best friends from Middle school. We'd basically spend the night at each others houses every weekend and just beat these games repeatedly. Dreamcast is where it was at.


Then of course there are other games that I just loved to death like .hack and megaman but they don't have too many memories attached to them. Well, the original megaman games do, I remember playing them with my elementary friends. And I'm sure in a few years I'll have fond memories of the Golden Sun, Sonic Battle, battle network series. megaman zero series and other more recent seriesbecause I played them with my highschool friends, but that still too close to pull at the nostalgia heart strings just yet.


I talked about Harvest Moon with some of my friends but they never really liked it, but I guess theres HMO, HME, DB, RS memories to consider..

A few games my brother introduced me into like Dynasty Warriors (who I love the characters and the lore around them) and Bouncer (which he didn't introduce, but we played together) which I loved that game so much. Awesome game.

Think thats most of them.

Guess some stragglers are Michael Jordan and the Windy city, Looney Toons B-ball, the Tiny Toons game, Ninja turtle game on NES, and other older games. Though I don't remember the events surrounded them, they just make me happy when I think of them.

Theres probably more, but I think I hit the timeline fairly evenly and often. Elementary, Middle, High school. Immediate family, extended family.

For me its lots of older games, new games have no soul- and its getting more and more depressing to be a gamer.

I have this collection of old Game And Watch games. Those are still fun to play.

And Glover is pretty great. I used to play it when I was little. Fun times.
