Gotta love homophones.

I write the wrong "their," "there" or "they're" sometimes. That usually happens when I'm typing really fast and not proofreading what I just wrote...

Sometimes I've seen people continuously use "their" when it should be "they're" and vice versa, and when I try to alert the person to his/her mistake... He/she just doesn't get it. --; I think an explanation of homophones and some common mistakes people make with them would be a good add to a grammar/writing guide.

I see 'then' and 'than' misused a lot. It's one of the worse mistakes I've seen, because I think 'than' is going extinct. Almost nobody uses 'than', just 'then'.

I mix up homophones when I'm typing fast as well. Then I look at whatever I typed afterward and feel ridiculous. -_-

That would be a good thing to add to a guide, Marie!

Yeah... I was looking through my last critical reading portfolio for Billy Budd, Sailor... I made a 100 on it, but I started reading it and found it was riddled with mispelled homophones. I kind of rushed on it because I procrastinated... Of course, I'm critical about such things, and by 'riddled' I mean around 5-6 mistakes in a 9 page CRP... Also, I don't think my English teacher reads my CRPs any more. Especially since my last two CRPs were 12 pages long... And the fact I realized I left out the Themes section for Jane Erye (le gasp, right? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) ) and made a 100 on it...

But still, stupid grammar mistakes make me feel like an idiot whether anyone spots them or not.

Woo! I'm all for spelling and grammar! Though I actually don't mind abbreviations. I don't care much, as long as I understand it.

I do admit that I've become more picky of my work, but about a year ago (when I joined) I typed a bit different. LOL smiley face

I found this quote on a random invision free board.

I think it really sums it all up.

QUOTE
To the lazy people, get your act together or don't post.

To sloppy posters, use spell checking and put the effort in.

To foreign visitors, this forum is English only. Spell check or do the best you can. We understand you are trying.

I hate misused homophones. That actually bugs me worse than a couple of typos. It probably just bugs me the most because I know which ones to use and how to use them.

Would people care to post links to examples of what they consider bad posts? I need a standard and defined rules before warnings are issued. Have to be fair and all.

I… couldn't even read that post. D:
That was a train wreck. Darth may have hit the nail on the head with that one. It's got Caps Lock, CAPSthenlowercase, spelling errors, and a lack of punctuation. Yeeesh.

I don't really want to embarrass anyone by pulling up posts with questionable grammar, so I'll let others do that. ]:

I don't want to put up examples either. It seems hurtful to point out as an example . . . but I'll say the major things that I think deserve a warning.

1. Abuse of capitals.
2. Abuse of punctuation. (either none or too much)
3. Heavy chatspeak. LOL and OMG are fine, but not 'leik' or 'u' or stuff like that.
4. Frequently misspelling simple words.

If I find a post that shows that stuff, can I PM you, Saffy? I really don't want to point it out in public as an example.

I am kind of a closed book when I come to new forums only because when im myself... Its real embarrassing because im such a big geek. And also. If anyone wants. I can make some Sugar Village videos when my copy arrives. However. It wont be good quality.....................

1. It's called an apostrophe! USE ONE.

2. I took a machine gun of periods and shot all over my post.

3. I never even played through one DAY of Sugar Village.

4. Woooow I'm lame.

Am I going to get a warning for my use of capitals? DX If so, laaame. Well, not really. I just like using capitals at times. But Mizuko has to be wary. Before she was using caps in every post she made until I told her that I think that there is a rule not to. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif)

There are quite a few examples that aren't too hard to find. And I won't post examples because I figure everyone finds me the forum b-tch anyways haha.

I think if you see someone posting things that have tons of capitals in them, misspelled words, chatspeak {all the things that are annoying}, you should PM them and warn them they may actually get a real warning. If they don't in the future posts attempt to talk normally then they should get a REAL warning.
