I like the ambiguosity and detatchment of the world of Harvest Moon from our world and its countries and histories. It also gives Harvest Moon the freedom of adding such fantasies as magic and goddesses and witches and mermaids and little Sprites in bobble hats who do chores in exchange for presents and shiny medals which you won off them in the first place.

Well, there is some bit of that aspect on OoS, what with the Goddess and possibility of a Witch & mermaid, but not actively. Sometimes magic RPs can get out of hand and too magical, whereas in HM, your main focus is farming and lovin' up on the human villagers. So, such is kind of the basis of OoS, I think.
And I dunno, I just think having access to the other part of the world opens up more diversity among characters--we can't all be English speaking people who grew up on the island! Plus the festivals held on the site are sometimes based off of magical occurrences, so there really isn't much of a lack of magic per say. So, in reality, it is kind of a fantasy world, like a mirrored version of our reality with a touch of fanciful whimsy to it. |

Maybe if the rest of the world was kept ambigous, that way each player could imagine it as what it means to them so that they don't feel confined or bored with the background. It would add freedom to character background and the whole setting of the RPG.

Not everyone has to be from the real world. We just did that since it's easier for members to relate their characters' pasts that way. Some characters are from a country that's made up, or are of a made-up nationality, and others don't clearly state their character's ethnic background or where they're from at all. ("Unknown" is a perfectly acceptable choice for your character's former home or nationality.)
The island itself is in an ambiguous location. It's up to the player to decide if it's in the real world or not. |

Good, I'm happy. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalagrin.gif)
Should try to avoid references to the real world or technology so much maybe so that people can make up their own minds about how they see the world of Harvest Moon, perhaps? For technology maybe keep it to what has been shown already in Harvest Moon. |

For technology maybe keep it to what has been shown already in Harvest Moon. Well, we've *tried* to keep technology to a minimum, and we have a list of items that are and aren't allowed, but people complain so much about it sometimes that we often have to re-write the list of things allowed and things banned. XP Particularly, we have to keep adding things to the "banned" list. (We nearly had to ban a member once because he was driving a car everywhere in and around the village. Then we had another incident involving cellphones.) Our "allowed" list is mostly based on the games, and we added karaoke machines and older game systems (though few use either of them) because people have specifically asked about them. But things like cellphones, computers, etc. aren't allowed at all. Cars are allowed at a minimal level on the mainland, but not at all in the village. |

Precisely. It's also to make sure we don't get any more serial killers. I can't imagine them in an HM world, yet people have played as them before.
We also want to make sure that people have decent writing skills, and that they've read and understand the rules. It's mostly common sense, but... People really seem to be lacking in that nowadays. |
