As far as school books go, again, I recall liking Animal Farm a lot, too.
WOO, COMMUNISM IN THE BARNYARD. |

As far as school books go, again, I recall liking Animal Farm a lot, too. WOO, COMMUNISM IN THE BARNYARD. Oh my gosh, I remember reading that book! I loved it!!!!! It was kinda sad though....I still remember a lot of the different rules, like, all animals are created equally, but some are more equal than others. And, you're not allowed to sleep in beds, unless there's sheets (or something like that). LOL! I remember we watched several different movie versions of it after we read it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) Some were...weird...LOL! |

Yeah, the movie versions… were frightening. The book in itself isn't that bad, but Old Major as a cartoon pig with crazy fat rolls and drool suddenly dying and like, recoiling into his gritty fat is not entertaining to any end. I'd rather read the book any day. :[
I think my favorite character was the one working horse, whose name escapes me. I always remember Clover, but the girlie horse and the he-man-horse are shadowed. "MUST WORK HAAARDER." So sad his fate. Glue factory. ;___; |

I loved Animal Farm, too. Boxer was the horse you were thinking of.
I read that book SO much in grade 10. I was on a three month exchange to Quebec and I only had a few english books, that being one of them. I read it over and over and over. |

I can't really recall any of their names. But yeah, you saw the cartoon one too? *shudders* We were all staring at the screen like, "What the freakin' crap???" I liked one that had real animals and their mouths moved, kind of like in that movie (I think it's called Babe?). It had a far happier ending. I can't remember cuz it's been like, 3 years, but who was the "main character" kind of thing? Was there one? I can't recall...My favorite character was the mother dog who had to give up her puppies I think, or something like that....in the movie they came back at the end. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalagrin.gif) That's why I liked the one movie. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalasmile.gif)

I never saw any of the movies, but yeah "Babe" was an animal movie where the real animals had moving mouths. "That'll do pig, that'll do."
I dislike most "classic" books turned movies. Lord of the Flies was an awesome book, but a weird movie. |

I was thinking the very same thing the other day! I really can't remember there being a "main" character, but it most definitely focused on the pigs. I do recall that Napoleon was the big-bad guy and I think Snowball was the good one that got run-off by Bluebell, Jessie, and Pincher the dogs. And then another one wrote stuff on the side of the barn. :\
Other than that, I know some named, important characters were Muriel the goat, Boxer [thanks!] and Clover and…MOLLIE [the horses], a snarky mule named Benjamin. There were some sheep, cows, chickens and ducks, but I think they were just dumb and cowardly. And then like, a cat? I need to read it again. Buh, I didn't like LotF all that much. Kind of disturbing, especially with the creepy talking pig's head. I mean, WHAT. And then the writing style seemed so old-school and broken. Iunno. The movie version was kind of, weird. And if one more person says how great To Kill A Mockingbird is, I think I'll implode. It's. Not. That. Great. |

(it's a Mockingbird.)
Lord of the Flies made me cry the first time I read it, but then again I was five years old and I didn't want Piggy to die. Poor Piggy. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalacry.gif) Animal Farm was great. It's a satire of the Russian Revolution and Communism in general. Old Major = Marx / Lenin Napoleon = Stalin Snowball = Trotsky Boxer = Loyal Russian workforce Squealer = Stalinist propaganda Ben the Donkey = George Orwell The humans = The Tsar and his family The pigs = Communist generals The puppies = Stalin's secret police The two neighbouring farms = England & Germany The farm = Russia The farmer's house = a farmer's house The book ends up with the pigs becoming human, literally. Scary. |

^I'm pretty sure everyone is aware of that, haha, especially anyone who has read the book in school. I don't know how many essays I've written comparing Animal Farm to the Russian Revolution.
I didn't mind To Kill a Mockingbird. My favorite is definitely One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, though. That book is pure genius. Lord of the Flies is good, too. I don't know, I never read those stories hoping to find a story. I read them because they're classic novels with classic social commentary. |

I never saw the movie, but I heard that it was pretty good (OFOtCN).
I don't read horror stories, I freak myself out too much. |

*backs away slowly and buttons mouth about To Kill A Mockingbird* Actually, I listened to this one CD over and over again when I read it, and now I can't help but think about the book when I hear some of the songs. It's rather depressing.
I've never read Lord of the Flies....I thought it was like, one of those things like Lord of the String....*dodges brick* |

The Shining!!!
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest!!! Absolutely love both and love the movies. But OFOtCN makes me sad at the end haha so I tend to avoid it. The only downfall to the Shining is that it's weird and sometimes makes me all ugh. But still, two great books and movies! |

The Shining was an alright movie from what I remember, but again, I haven't read the book. It was pretty exciting? A little bit creepy.
OFOtCN was... oh man. I did a huge project on it for school where I "mapped out" Chief's insanity level based on his actions, with reference to what McMurphy was doing at the time. It was intense, it took me (well, and Fraser since he did all of the artwork) SO long to do. I got like 25/20 on that project. It was awesome. It was just such an intense book. I remember reading out sections of it (specifically the scenes that hinted at sexual abuse) and it just made me sick. |

Anyone ever read Speak? I just read it for English. It was pretty good. I've also found out we have to read Lord of the Flies.

QUOTE The Twilight books depress me in that I'm surprised the author could stoop that low. They seem to be the collected fanfics of a dozen teenage girls/frighteningly girlish teenage boys, but in hardback edition. I concur. Never shall I touch those stories. *shudders* |

I feel that I can't make any opinions about the books until I've read them for myself. Not liking something just because other people like it is just discrimination. It might be good - it might not, but how can you know until you read them yourself?

I'm not saying I don't like it because everyone else likes it; I'm not discriminating it. I've heard both cases, and I know what it's about, and it's not my type of book. That's all I mean. I won't read it, because it doesn't interest me, and sounds a tad bit angsty.
