Well, my brother knows all about it cuz he did all the work there. Said something about Demilitarized Zones being more effective, not really sure what it is but I'll see if I can get him to explain to me/write about it/find something so I can share it, but it's rather effective. Still, however, the connection will only go as fast as the weakest link so if you're playing someone with a poor connection, it'll still suck no matter how good yours is.

When I have good instructions to help you do it, Darth, we'll try it out and see how your connection is. Like I said, Massachusetts to Texas was near perfect (got the green dot).

Anyway, here's the information on port forwarding/DMZ, written by a friend and revised by my brother. PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS BEFORE SCREWING AROUND WITH YOUR INTERNET, YOU COULD KNOCK OUT YOUR INTERNET FOR LIKE A WEEK IF YOU TAKE THE WRONG STEPS.


First you need to set up a static IP address. To do this:

Pick an OS. I'm working off XP, so that's what I describe.

Basically, follow the instructions. You need to follow steps 1 - 4. By that time, you need to have written down your IP address, the Subnet Mask, the Default Gateway and the two DNS servers. You do not need to do the rest of the steps for your Wii, since you'll be doing them on the Wii itself. After you have written down the stuff you need to, scroll down, and you'll see this thing after Step 10 that boxes you can enter numbers into. Enter your Default Gateway and your IP address, click the button, and it'll give you five IP addresses. Pick one of the IP addresses you know isn't set up statically on some computer in your house (pick the fifth one if you're not sure if anyone's using any) and write that down with your other stuff. Label it "Wii IP".

Here's your list of stuff you've written down should looks something like:

IP Address: ###.###.###.###
Subnet Mask: ###.###.###.###
Default Gateway: ###.###.###.###
DNS1: ###.###.###.###
DNS2: ###.###.###.###
Wii IP: ###.###.###.###

Now that you have all that info, you need to figure out what router you're using. Look at it, figure out the name brand, and the model number (not the serial number, the model number). Then look here and find it, then click the link for that router.

After you pick your router, it'll give you a massive list of games and stuff. Smash Brothers isn't currently listed cause they're lazy and haven't finished the walkthrough, but it's fairly easy to figure out anyway. Just pick any game, I use Empire Earth for simplicity's sake. (here's an example of a router + Empire Earth combo, your page will look slightly different if you're not on the same router. Use the page you pulled up for YOUR router, not this page, it's just an example).

At the top, it'll have a spot that says:

Do not skip this step!
Please enter the static ip you want to forward to:

and give you part of your IP, with a box to enter the last section. Enter the last section of what you marked as the "Wii IP" earlier.

Follow the instructions on whatever page router you have, and it'll bring you the port forwarding screen. It might be called something else, but it'll just be a big list of stuff you can enter numbers into and click enable.

The page tells you to enter for ports 33334 33335 33336, don't do that. That's the Empire Earth stuff. Instead, enter the same way for these ports:

28910, 29900, 29901, 29920, 80, and 443

Save the settings, and you can exit out of the page. Congratulations, you've just portforwarded the stuff, only one more step and you're home free.

Turn on your Wii, at main menu, select the thing at the bottom left corner "Wii Config"
=> Wii Settings
=> click right arrow
=> third option Internet
=> Connection Settings
=> choose whichever you're currently going to be using, I'm guessing it'll be the first for most of you
=> third option Change Settings

Scroll around the menus til you find "Auto-Obtain IP Address", it should be currently marked "Yes". Change it to "No". It'll give you a screen, enter in what you've labelled as "Wii IP".

The next screen after that should be "Auto-Obtain DNS" set to "yes". Again, change it to "No" and enter in the two DNS Servers you've written down earlier. Save it all, exit out, and it should do a connection test. Provided you did everything right, and entered in the correct numbers, then you should have successfully completed the port forwarding process. The only thing that could go wrong at that point would be if someone else had set up that static IP earlier in your house that you weren't aware of. At which point you just do the process over with a different IP from that calculator thing you did earlier and try again.


- Some browsers cause your router to crash when you try to access them. If FireFox or something doesn't work, try Internet Explorer or something else (my router requires Internet Explorer). If the router crashes, you'll probably need to reset your router manually.

- Alternatively, you can set your Wii up for DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), which pretty much has the same results. Somewhere in your router's config settings should be something that mentions a DMZ Host. If you put your Wii IP in this field and then enable DMZ, that should work as well (if not better) than Port Forwarding.

- If none of this stuff is doing anything, it's possible that you need to configure MAC addresses on your router. First, we need the MAC addresses, so turn on your Wii
=> Wii Settings
=> click right arrow
=> third option Internet
=> Console Information

Write these two numbers down. Go to your Router settings stuff again and look around for something along the lines of a MAC Address (or just MAC or whatever). If you find the page, put in the two numbers you got from your Wii under the MAC Address fields, then put the Wii's IP in the IP field. There should be a box that asks for you to enable MAC Address control or something like that, go ahead and enable that. Save the settings and restart the router if necessary.

Again, please read the whole thing before taking any actions. If you are uncomfortable making changes to your internet, show this to someone you trust who is capable or just not worry about it.

Darth, send me a PM when you wanna test to see how well you Brawl upon finishing, my phone gets my emails so even if I'm walking my dog or something I'll know to go back and get online to test it.

I dug up Kozunai's friend code, it's 1289-8065-7799. Oh yeah, and I'm making FC and GC fight eachother cuz they didn't post their codes. I am sitting this one out unless someone is a no-show.

Gonna need some more detail on that step, we did this 3 months ago so it's hard to understand what you're talking about. Don't say it in steps, just print screen or just describe it more specifically.

Step ten only contains the following text:

Step 10:
Before you make any changes, write down the settings that you see on this page. If something goes wrong you can always change the settings back to what they were! You should see a dot in the Obtain an IP address automatically box. If you do not, your connection is already setup for a static ip. Just close all these windows and you are done.

Pick an ip address and enter it into the IP Address box. The ip address you choose should be very similar to the router's ip addres. Only the last number of the ip address should be different. If the router's ip address is 192.168.1.1, I might choose 192.168.1.10. The ip address you choose should end with a number between 1 and 254, and should not be the same as the router's ip address. Every device that connects to your network needs to have it's own ip address.

Put the subnet mask we previously found in the subnet mask section. The default gateway should go into the Default gateway box. Enter the dns servers we prevoiusly found into the two DNS Server boxes. Click okay all the way out of this menu.

If you find that you can not pull up webpages, the problem is most likely the dns numbers you entered. Give your ISP a call, and they will be able to tell you which dns servers to use. This is a question they answer all of the time. They will be able to tell you what you should use right away.

That's it you should be done! If you can't connect to the internet go back and change your configuration back to what it originally was.
