Yeah, trenches are a pain in the trumpet to make.

Did you notice that if you till a patch of soil and then press the d-pad in the direction you want to go that you'll automatically move one space in that direction without turning? Do that and then till the next area of soil while you're still under the gridlock imposed by that movement and you should get trenches to form.
