For the films, at least.
The first one was released in 2001. I was ten years old! And now I'm about to be 20. It has taken a decade, but I've enjoyed watching them throughout the years. They've grown up with me. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) Have they grown up with you? Is anybody excited to see the finale? It's gonna be 4 hours and 38 minutes long. Midnight releaaaaase! |

In later books, it is important. But since it doesn't come into to major consideration until halfway through the series, I'd say it was unnecessary in a basic explanation.
All you really need to know is that Harry is an apparently normal (if abused) child, though odd things seem to happen to him. When he turns ten, he learns he's really a wizard. He then goes to school to learn how to utilize his newly discovered powers. Over the course of his education, the evil Lord Voldemort begins to come to power. Harry must learn how to stop him. |
