Not sure if there's a topic on reading already, but I'll make the assumption that there isn't.
How often do you read? What was the last book you read? Any great suggestions? I've gotten into reading recently which is quite new to me. I used to really hate it because no books really interested me. I found most of what was around was fantasy which I simply did not care for. However, I've always been into writing and felt it was a necessity that I start reading - if not just to pick up on new skills. So I decided to pick up The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy which I had purchased about two years ago and never finished. For the past three days I've done at least an hour of reading every night, and have just finished reading the book. Quite an accomplishment for me so now I'm on a bit of a high. I intend to read the read the next book in the series, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. I will likely go pick it up the next time I visit Chapters. Your turn. Go! |

I don't read much any more, besides the reading I'm obligated to do for English & the mandatory 10-minute reading for pleasure wee have at the beginning of class. But then again, I'm literate as it is and have finished around seven-eight books this year.
Currently for school I'm nearly done with The Great Gatsby, which I dislike greatly. Too much symbolism for me, and really not that entertaining for me. I'm also not a fan of the 20s, which may have an effect. It's a short read, for the most part, and I've heard it's one of those books you either love or hate. I'm in the middle of Agatha Christie's Hallowe'en Party for my other reading. I've read Murder on the Orient Express very recently and would highly recommend it to anyone, but so far this one just doesn't really have that masculine simplicity of her other Poirot novels. I can't decide if I like it or not yet, because it's pretty slow paced. One book I also read this year was The Lovely Bones. Carp. Too much shmex and freakish stuff. The movie is like, the children's version of that book. It was good at points, but dragged on near the end. Bitterly disappointing however. Scarlet Pimpernel was quite good, as expected. For those who enjoy reading plays, I'd recommend Threepenny Opera by Brecht or The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Both are fantastic. Huck Finn can go live in a hole it was so dull and pointless. Catherine Delors's Mistress of the Revolution was a great read, though lengthy. But a great historical fiction novel if you like that stuff. [/bookrant] |
