You should really avoid Tree of Tranquility and wait for Animal Parade. It is infinitely better. Despite all the little nitpicky things about it, you would not regret buying it. (Unless you end up hating Harvest Moon...) Other good games to try would be the original Harvest Moon (which you can get on Wii Ware or whatever that option is that lets you download old games...), Harvest Moon 64 for the N64, and (despite my extreme ire for it in particular) Back to Nature for the Playstation - which you can get as a port on the PSP in the form of Harvest Moon: Boy and Girl. That particular port also includes the girl version, so you might want to try that. If all else fails, Save the Homeland for the PS2 was interesting if somewhat annoying in the fact that you couldn't actually marry the bachelorettes. I've heard that Magical Melody is good too, though I've never played it due to having lost all faith in the Harvest Moon franchise with the release of A Wonderful Life.
