Well since this is the book club, shouldn't it have something to do with books in it?

I was just thinking about this topic.
I find it hard to find someone with a good writing style or just generally a good book, but the one I just got through reading was pretty good. It's called Push, and the author is Sapphire. It's about this African-American teenager from Harlem who's suffered a lot of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse in her home. She's completely illiterate and has two children at the age of 16 (I believe). I'll put a more detailed subject matter in the following spoiler, because it's not really something you younger guys should be reading, because it's really deep and traumatic. A caring teacher comes to her aid, and helps her change her life for the good. Spoiler: Anyway, to be more detailed, she was raped by her father on several occassions, and sexually abused by her mother as well. Her two children are her father's; she is beaten by her mother and it's just really scary, but is also enlightening in a way, because some people don't realize these things, unless their put in plain English. The end is a bit vague, but the story is all-in-all inspirational. Note: There is also very strong language, so if you can't understand that it is to exhibit a certain character's environment/personality or it just bothers you, don't read it. Edit: Also, they're making a movie. Here's the link to some information about it. Precious |
