So this is my new fanfic. Actually, I've had it saved on my computer for about three months... I got writer's block on it. And from writing Dead Roses (which I updated today, btw) and posting it on Ranch Story, I got inspiration to write more chapters. Thanks to all my reviewers on my previous stories and... here we go... Please feel free to critique this.

Chapter One

It was morning. Six o'clock to be exact. My head hesitantly rose off the pillow and I looked into the mirror. My hair had its usual cow lick, that even a gallon of hairspray wouldn't hold back. I stood, and my body felt like I weighed a ton. My shoulders slumped as I looked through the wardrobe for clothes. I finally pulled out a purple suit.

I slipped on the burmuda shorts with the metropolitan-style shirt. I drearily walked over to the vanity and pulled out some makeup and applied it. I made sure my eyeliner and mascara was perfect, it had to be. My only pretty features were my eyes. My hair was hideous, and my body looked that that of a skeleton's. I backed away to look in my full-length mirror and saw the image I saw every morning in it.

I sighed and drudged out the door to look at my pitiful crops. I never in my life had grown plants, and it showed in my work. None of my plants were ever perfect, good even. Always decent, and everyone knows that decent plants are a sign of a poor farmer. I felt like crying. I had been working so hard. But, instead, my thoughts turned to a different thing to do on the ranch. That would be, of course, raising animals. However, I'd need a building for that.

My feet carried me to Dale's Carpentry. I had never had any dealings with the man, so I didn't know what to expect. So, as I walked in the well-built building, I was greeted by an argument going on by the man who seemed to be Dale and a boy who seemed to be his son. It was pretty heated.

My first thought was that the son was an immature brat, but then I saw his face. He had a gorgeous, boyish face. I couldn't explain, really, why I thought he looked so handsome. Something about his looks sent chills down my spine. The feelings of giddiness soon demoted to disappointment. He would never like me. Someone like him would want a pretty girl.

"Dad, there's someone here!" the boy said as his dad went in for another rant attack.

Dale whirled around and saw me and said, "Sorry, Miss Angela!"

I did a double take, "H-how did you know me?"

"Well, I built your house for one... But anyways... Nice to meet 'cha!" he held his hand out.

I received his welcome and glanced at the one who was obviously his son. He was staring at me. Maybe he liked me, too. Nah, I'm not pretty. I'm not pretty, I've got to remember that.

"This here's mah son, Luke. Say 'hi', will ya son?" he scolded Luke.

Luke slowly walked closer. His eyes sparkled with some kind of charm. Like he was as a little kid. It was funny, because he looked to be about twenty-one. Well, not funny like 'ha,ha' but-- you know what I mean. He wouldn't take his amber eyes off of me. That's another thing I noticed, his eyes were the most glorified shade of amber. They looked like beautiful topazes.

"Hi-I-I..." his voice quivered.

"Umm... Hello," I looked into his eyes.

Dale cleared his voice and my brain snapped back into reality. Luke jumped, turned away, and rubbed the back of his head. His father pointed at the door and Luke walked that way and opened the door and walked out. I jumped and looked back at Dale, whose face was looking disapprovingly in Luke's direction. I sighed lightly.

"That boy... Anyways... Any way I can help ya, ma'am?" he asked me as he took his place behind the cash register.

"I need a chicken coop. How much are those?" I looked over the ledge, unsuccessfully trying to find a chicken coop.

He sounded surprised, "A chicken coop? Not much demand for those these days. I finally took it off the ledger, but I still have the blue print. I'll send Luke to start on it..."

"How much do I owe you?" I was almost worried.

"Since I'm letting Luke build it without any help, it's free. But don't worry, he's great at what he does!" for them to be in such an arguing tone earlier, Dale's confidence in his son almost shocked me.

I farewelled him and exited the facility. The birds were chirping high above the trees, and the sun was fully out. The trees were in full bloom. I hadn't noticed how beautiful it was on Waffle Island for being so pessimistic. It was a beautiful day that the Lord had given me.

As I walked down the path, or short cut rather, to my farm I was interrupted by someone calling me, "Angela!"

It was Luke. His unruly hair going everywhere as he ran. He sure had more energy than I did. He could do so much, and he seemed so much like a little kid.

"Hi, Luke!" I nervously answered.

"I was wondering if you'd like me to show you the woods?" his teeth showing in his wide smile.

"Sure," I told him.

He took my hand unexpectedly, so I was forced to accept his pull. He ran like there was no tomorrow. And stopped almost as quickly as he had started, considering the distance to the woods wasn't long. I had never seen them before.

"These are the praline woods... actually this is the wood plot, but the area outside of it are the Praline woods..." he announced.

"You mean like shrimp? I thought most of the places around here were named for sweets and desserts?" I was almost confused.

"Close, but no cigar. It's named for Praline Pecans," he smiled, proudly.

"Of course... I feel like an idiot!" I hit the side of my head with my hand.

"There's no reason to feel like that... I thought the same thing before my dad told me..." he blushed.

"Oh... Thanks... Gosh! Look at the time!" I exclaimed glancing at my watch, "I've got to get going!"

"Angela? You will come visit, right?" he asked, as a little kid would.

"You'll be visiting me tomorrow!" he looked confused at my declaration. When I finally said, "Your dad said you were going to build my chicken coop!" he understood.

"I'll see ya tomorrow, then!" he called excited.

"Mhmm! Bye!" I farewelled.

Oh, I liked how much detail you put into describing certain parts of the story. Like, when you were describing Luke, you said his eyes looked like topazes. And when you were describing Angela when she woke up. Anyways, I like it :D
Update soon~
