So I'm taking the ACT for the first time on Saturday, and I'm getting pretty nervous. It's been a few weeks since I've gotten out of school so I feel kind of rusty in the knowledge department if you know what I mean. I know most of our older members have taken this (or atleast I think) so can anyone give a rookie any tips so I don't go in helpless?

Do a basic review and you should be fine. If you have time to peruse a ACT study guide it will help a little.

I just took my ACT in April. It's all about pacing yourself and not getting nervous. I felt like I did better when I remained calm. Another thing that my teacher told us was to always make sure to cancel out any answers that are definately wrong, that way you boost your chances of getting the correct answer. Good luck!

If writing is required write as much as you possibly can it seems even the greatest short argument will lose points I know I had to take the ACT 3 times before I got a score I was happy with...

Yeah review look at subjects you feel you have a weekness in. mine was basically english related so I did extra review work on those all in all my scores went like this

19 -> 21 ->18

lucky for me they kept my highest score

im sure you'll do fine you do get more than one chance.

Oh! On the writing portion, always make sure to include a counter argument. if you don't include one of these, they automaticly bump down your writing score. Just to clarify:

A counter argument is when you bring up something the oposing side would say, and then you shoot it down with a fact that makes it looks bad. For example, say the topic of the essay is Cats VS Dogs. Your essay is supporting the dogs. That would mean you would need to include a counter argument at some point saying something like "Cat owners could say that dogs shed just as much as cats. That is false because not all dogs shed."

I also suggest you bring an extra set of batteries for your calculator. I know a lot of people whose calculators died in the middle of the ACT.

Just finished, and I did do a counter arguement luckily (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif)

Feel like I did badly. Managed my time poorly in the science section, and wasn't confident in math at all (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) English and reading, however, went pretty well for me. Feel like math and science are really going to be my only anchors, and the writing part was very easy.

Now to wait, and if I don't do hot on the writing score then ehh....

Yopu always have to remember that writing is usually looked over anyways, so don't be too nervous about your score on that. ;)

Z- But I like writing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) That is true though..

And thanks Novi :D Hope I score some what decent. I'm aiming for a 23 or 24ish for now, but that's nothing compared to some of my friends who get like 27s 28s, and two of my friends scored a 31, and another got a 32 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) Was proud of them though. The one that got a 32 really worked for it.

There are always going to be those people that do better. In my eyes, I think anything in the twenties is good...
