I don't watch anime much anymore but when I did, I really liked Air, Kanon, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Fruits Basket, Host Club (until the fandom became completely intolerable) and, my favourite, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

As far as manga, I really liked Immortal Rain and pre-Mello/Near Death Note, until, again, the fandom became a bunch of screaming 14 year old girls who only care about baby kittens. (Come to think of it, baby kittens has ruined a lot of potentially good fandoms. I tend to avoid anything marketed at girls for that reason.)

Well, if you're in the mood for something with substance, I'd suggest some of the newer anime like Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden), and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. There's also awesome shows like (the often overlooked) Seirei no Moribito, Last Exile, Denno Coil, Shigofumi, and Michiko to Hatchin.

As for manga.... 20th Century Boys. Seriously. That's my absolute favorite manga. It kicks so much trumpet.

D.Gray-Man has is one of the best ever! I wouldn't recommend the anime, since the anime kills the manga. I recommend the manga entirely, I've been collecting the series for a while now, not once have I gotten bored with it. It also has some of the best villains you'll ever see.

Last Exile is an awesome anime that IS often overlooked. It has a unique style and a great story. After the first few episodes you'll get hooked. ^-^

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was fun for a while. But I got bored of it after a while. Ouran Host Club used to make me laugh when I didn't get to see all the stupid fandom.

Tegami Bachi is a series that I've been collecting the manga and watching the anime. It's very good, so I definitely recommend it. It also goes by 'Letter Bee'.

Aaand, One Piece is awesome and funny too. I love that series~ <333

Eureka Seven is also an epic anime and manga. I only watched the anime, but there are now mangas of it in the bookstore. It's got great story, humor, and all the good stuff you like.

Oh, and ghost hunt! I've been watching the anime, and it's absolutely AWESOME! The first 'file' or 'case' is a bit boring or lame, but that's because it's more comedic and introducing the whole gang. But after that it starts to get a bit scary. Especially 'file 7' *shudders* It's got a lot of good humor to it too. I hear the manga art style is a bit different though.

And.. Hmm.. I've recently been checking out Nabari No Ou. It looked interesting to me. I really like the protagonist.

Sorry I was being a bit brief here. if you would like to more I can easily tell you why these animes/mangas are great.

My all time favorite animes are tied for number 1. Case Closed and InuYasha. I know, I know. Those are some of the most americanized animes, but they are excellent! Following those two on my list would be Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, Fruits Basket, and DNAngel.

And when watching InuYasha, you absolutely must see The Final Act. It is 26 more InuYasha episodes after the end of the original series.

Or Here and There Now and Then. It's a way shorter anime that you can watch online and it has a very very good point to it! It's just awesome, overall. That's all I can suggest cuz that's all I've watched. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif) ;

Detective Conan (Or, as Kozu called it "Case Closed") is indeed fantastic, though I highly, HIGHLY recommend watching it subtitled. The American name changes and overall dubbing are horrible.

Fruits Basket is good if you read the manga. The anime was quite inferior.

Also, other good mangas to be on the lookout for are Hellsing, Children of the Sea, Claymore, YamaNade (The Wallflower), Arata - The Legend, Gokusen, Drifters, Emma, Gantz, Hana Yori Dango, Monster, Usagi Drop, Shaman King, xxxHOLiC (or anything else written by CLAMP), Spice and Wolf, Trigun, Piano no Mori, and many others that I can't be bothered to think of right now.

Oh yeah. And of course..... GUNDAM. ANYTHING GUNDAM IS WORTH CHECKING OUT. *Gundamfanboiextreme*

Oh stop being a weeaboo. The name changes and voices would only annoy someone who was already a fan of the Japanese. If they haven't seen/read it yet then the NA version is just fine.

I'm probably the odd one out (or just the Old Lady), since most of the stuff on my list are shows from the mid-90s.

Fushigi Yuugi is probably the very top. It's the show that InuYasha tried and absolutely failed to be, though if you don't like romance, drama, and teenage angst, you should probably run. Far away. This show is also not for you if you like to judge 15 year old girls by the standards of adults, because the main character is a kid to the core...which is what I think makes this show so enjoyable. It has the Shoujo anime staple of a single girl saving a fantasy world with a bunch of sexy young men, but each character is unique and very flawed (though granted, they each have their definite personality types, but then again, if you want to categorize every character known to man by their given base archetype, no matter how well-crafted, you might as well do it to real people too), and the storyline is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time, with enough twists and turns to keep you interested (except with the first OVA. That was sort of weird). The dub for this is ABOMINABLE, though. It is legendary in its amount of suck. Only watch it dubbed if you have a complete aversion to subtitles...seriously. The actors in the English version are way inferior to the Japanese originals, and even if you watch the dub without seeing the Japanese version first, your ears will bleed. It's THAT bad.

Second on the list is Senkaiden Houshin Engi (Called "Soul Hunter" in the US, if you can manage to grab a copy). It's a sort of parody of the story of the terrible Queen Da Ji (called 'Dakki') in Chinese History/Legends (I put a slash there, since she appears in both), with a major Shounen twist, giving out the whole image of friendship, family, etc...while still keeping a good plot going and a political sense about it that isn't arbitrary, and even some fingers in Historical Pies (the 'torture Devices' that Dakki makes, for example, are based on ones Da Ji actually used back in the day).

Third would be Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water. Basically this anime is 20,000 Leages Under the Sea with an anime twist, and what starts out as a simple kids' anime turns rather interesting and dark by about episode 6 (which is when it starts getting good), and, the Infamous Island Arc (a serious of filler episodes that are not popular amongst fans--me included)aside, STAYS good until the end. It's hard to classify this...it's more of a Seinen series than anything else, though it's very much not everyone's cup of tea. The dub is actually quite good for this one, and I found myself enjoying it despite the Japanese version having more 'professional' actors (the fact that the English actors tried to use the proper accents, and that the lead child characters were played by actual CHILD ACTORS, was a major plus for me).

Then we get into the magical girl anime...Sailor Moon's more romantic (and creepy, if you think about the fact that 12 year old girls are well-endowed and running around in wedding dresses and skimpy dresses, respectively) counterpart, Wedding Peach, is my favorite, though it's a major turnoff to most. I guess girls wearing wedding dresses, fighting evil with Magical Girly Accessories and Lipliner, and preaching about the values of love and marriage is just not everyone's thing. Though despite that, it actually has a deceptively complex storyline that actually bucks some of the traditional Magical Girl Cliches. Okay, so it's complex for a MAGICAL GIRL ANIME, but seeing as it's a show aimed at very young girls, I think the storyline ignoring norms and doing its own thing is actually pretty cool. That, and I'm biased--Momoko Hanasaki is way more likeable than Usagi Tsukino / Serena / Bunny to me, namely because she actually has a talent and does something other than cry: she's a photographer for the school newspaper!

And for the more modern stuff, Kanon, Clannad, Air, Ef: A Tale of memories/Melodies, and Shakugan no Shana are titles that can't really be beat, though I sort of wish that they had more of a fanbase...or at the very least, more of a fanbase that is above the radar. I can't seem to find many fans of these series who actually talk about them...it's pretty sad.

...um. So yeah. There's my ramble for the day (Holy crud, that was long!)

Oh my god so I know most would not expect this from a guy like me Bat an anime called School Days (TV) Was really good like you know what I think that was a crazy anime. It starts off all sweet with This guys likes this girl and his friend (since childhood) helps him start talking to the girl Of course his childhood friend likes him too they do that too much in my opinion. So basically everything is going fine until maybe half way through the series but the main guy becomes a total man whore and more crazy stuff ensues. It's only 13 Episodes long if you can find it it's a definite watch.

I've watched quite some anime up to the point, although my top list may seem rather weird. well, it's all in the power of IMHO. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif)
- Tsubasa Chronicle
- Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
- Spice & Wolf
- Kara no Kyoukai
- Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei

I also have a long list of works I liked almost as much (including Gurren-Lagann, Seto no Hanayome, Chobits, xxxHolic, Death Note, Ouran High School Host Club, Soul Eater... ahem, that could be a long list indeed). As to manga, I don't read that many, but Ranma 1/2 and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle are my favourites (yes, I do like CLAMP works in general). And if I was asked to pick one favourite director... that would be Akiyuki Shinbo.
The latest anime I watched was Angel Beats, the impression very positive despite some bugs traditional for most Key projects. Still, this would be their best one so far, IMHO. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lalaexdee.gif)
